HOST LFST RB3000: enough to have grandchildren), I have been

HOST LFST RB3000: fascinated by stories about the "secrets of the

HOST LFST RB3000: orient", "the hidden teachings beyond yoga",

HOST LFST RB3000: "the mysteries of the oversoul", and special

HOST LFST RB3000: powers and gifts that certain people had, like

HOST LFST RB3000: prodigies, savants, geniuses, yogis and sorcerers.

HOST LFST RB3000: More than that, I began my relationship with

HOST LFST RB3000: Death very early on. When my grandfather died,

HOST LFST RB3000: nobody could answer my questions about what

HOST LFST RB3000: had happened to him or, more importantly for

HOST LFST RB3000: me, how to keep the same thing from happening

HOST LFST RB3000: to myself.

HOST LFST RB3000: inevitability of death that gave me my first push

HOST LFST RB3000: struggle until I found the secrets of life and

HOST LFST RB3000: death. I refused to die, and life as I was finding it

HOST LFST RB3000: was too painful to endure.

HOST LFST RB3000: In my search for answers to these questions, I

HOST LFST RB3000: started noticing the mysteries of life, of existing,

HOST LFST RB3000: the paradoxes, the missing pieces, the gaps and

HOST LFST RB3000: anomalies. They taught science in school as if

HOST LFST RB3000: everything was settled, and everything could be

HOST LFST RB3000: explained (and soon *would* be) in terms of

HOST LFST RB3000: matter and energy, and location and time.

HOST LFST RB3000: Then I started finding out that the more

HOST LFST RB3000: sophisticated science became, the faster the

HOST LFST RB3000: questions ran away from the answers. For

HOST LFST RB3000: example, as unlikely as the big-bang theory

HOST LFST RB3000: universe "once and for all." But then it started

HOST LFST RB3000: posing more questions than it answered.

HOST LFST RB3000: bang, or why there are stars that have to be

HOST LFST RB3000: older than the universe, or what the mind really

HOST LFST RB3000: is, or what gravity really is, or what really is

HOST LFST RB3000: "inside of" an atomic particle, or what *time*

HOST LFST RB3000: really is.

HOST LFST RB3000: And it certainly never answered who am I, and

HOST LFST RB3000: how did I get here, and what and where was I

HOST LFST RB3000: "before" I was alive. Then I got to the mysteries

HOST LFST RB3000: of the Egyptians, and what myths and scriptures

HOST LFST RB3000: were really talking about, and why 50,000-year-

HOST LFST RB3000: old fragments had information that our science is

HOST LFST RB3000: only now "discovering."

HOST LFST RB3000: and science always to dodge the big questions,

HOST LFST RB3000: so it remained my quest to find either the

HOST LFST RB3000: The first thing I noticed about these practices is

HOST LFST RB3000: that they were all extremely tedious, repetitious,

HOST LFST RB3000: boring and useless. I always wondered why so

HOST LFST RB3000: many devotees have stuck with them, and even

HOST LFST RB3000: sat in caves for years doing them!

HOST LFST RB3000: .

HOST LFST RB3000: What I discovered was that first the mind has to

HOST LFST RB3000: become very quiet, like a still lake, which reflects

HOST LFST RB3000: like a lovely mirror, instead of the noisy froth of

HOST LFST RB3000: endless thoughts of selfishness, indulgence and

HOST LFST RB3000: justifications that go on perpetually in my head,

HOST LFST RB3000: and even in my body.

HOST LFST RB3000: The next thing I found out was that awareness

HOST LFST RB3000: and mindfulness take energy, far more than it

HOST LFST RB3000: takes to learn computer programming or to build

HOST LFST RB3000: a house, and I'd been wasting most of my energy

HOST LFST RB3000: on self-pity, unnecessary tensions and scattered

HOST LFST RB3000: thoughts.

HOST LFST RB3000: .

HOST LFST RB3000: Later on, I learned that I am filled to the brim

HOST LFST RB3000: with unconscious programs that spoil my

HOST LFST RB3000: relationships, my opportunities and all chances of

HOST LFST RB3000: happiness. I found that, with a quiet mind and a

HOST LFST RB3000: humble heart, it was possible to temporarily stop

HOST LFST RB3000: the action of the programs.

HOST LFST RB3000: .

HOST LFST RB3000: At these times I found that I could perceive and

HOST LFST RB3000: relate to other people in new ways. I felt so free

HOST LFST RB3000: and expansive when this happened, that I even

HOST LFST RB3000: looked for more "boring" rituals to do. I thought I

HOST LFST RB3000: had finally achieved something, or at least was

HOST LFST RB3000: on my way to something important.

HOST LFST RB3000: Of course such "realizations" led me to arrogance

HOST LFST RB3000: and self-centeredness, and thus was entered into

HOST LFST RB3000: deeper lessons of humility, surrender to higher

HOST LFST RB3000: purpose, and the need to honor the support and

HOST LFST RB3000: wisdom of my fellows on the path. (Sounds like I

HOST LFST RB3000: just got out of a Tibetan monastery, doesn't it?

HOST LFST RB3000: .

HOST LFST RB3000: I never did know what I could really expect,

HOST LFST RB3000: despite all the fantastic stories I had read. While

HOST LFST RB3000: I wished that wondrous powers and sensibilities

HOST LFST RB3000: were possible, for the most part, the stories did

HOST LFST RB3000: not imbue a sense of validity for me. The few that

HOST LFST RB3000: did seem reasonable I regarded as virtually

HOST LFST RB3000: unattainable, especially in light of the

HOST LFST RB3000: weaknesses which I had discovered in myself

HOST LFST RB3000: from long examination.
